Hepatitis Course
October 4-5, 2011
Empowerment Resource Center, in partnership with the
National Viral Hepatitis Technical Assistance Center, will offer its Integrating
Viral Hepatitis Into HIV/AIDS Programs and Services for High-Risk Clients in October 4-5, 2011. This course
is in-depth and will be presented in layman's terms that cover the following:
- • Distinction between the different types of Hepatitis
- • HIV and Hepatitis Co-infection and their complications
- • Treatment option for Hepatitis
- • Hepatitis prevention and intervention strategies
Intended Audience
Heterogeneous groups of providers, such as health educators, counselors, social workers,
nurses, physicians working in settings that address STD, corrections, HIV, and substance abuse.
Topics will include:
- Hepatitis and the Liver
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Risk Assessment and Tailored Harm Reduction Messages
- Evaluation and Closure

HIV 1001 Course
Scheduled Upon Request
Empowerment Resource Center will offer this course for service
providers of high-risk clients. This course will build on the participant's basic
knowledge and develop additional skills in the areas of HIV counseling and testing, HIV transmission
modes, essential communication skills, basic HIV science, risk reduction plan development,
identifying behaviors that make clients at higher risk of HIV infection, and HIV prevention
and intervention strategies.
Prerequisite:
Participants enrolled in this course must have a basis knowledge of HIV/AIDS or
must have attended an HIV 101 course.
This course will cover:
- HIV/AIDS Facts
- HIV Science
- The Distinction Between HIV and AIDS
- HIV Transmission Modes
- Communication and Counseling Skills
- Developing and Negotiating a Risk Reduction Plan
- Identify Higher Risk Behaviors
- HIV Prevention and Intervention Strategies

TB Update and Skin Test Certification Course

Empowerment Resource Center will offer a one day workshop
that prepares a individuals to administer and read tuberculin skin tests and to counsel clients on results.
The course is delivered in two segments: Segment 1 incorporates a lecture, video and discussion; and
Segment 2 includes a practicum which will allow participants to administer and receive a TST (with normal saline),
practice reading induration, interpret results, and discuss case studies.
Certification Requirements:
Certification requirements include completing the one-day course, administering 10 actual
skin tests under supervision and reading 10 tests under supervision in the clinical setting.
Each certification lasts for 2 years from the date of the class.
Recertification Requirements:
Recertification requirements include reviewing the current edition of the Georgia Tuberculosis
Reference Guide, viewing the Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Test, March 2003 video, administering 5 actual skin tests under
supervision and reading 5 tests under supervision in the clinical setting.
Upon completion of this class, the participant will be able to
- Identify 3 factors that can influence whether TB is transmitted.
- Explain the difference between LTBI and active TB disease
- Recognize and list the symptoms of TB
- List 4 steps for screening for TB
- Demonstrate the proper method of TST administration, measurement and interpretation of the results

STD 101 Course
October 28, 2010
ERC kicks off its fall Prevention Education Series with the STD 101 Course
entitled Trick or Treat: What's In Your Goody Bag?. Michelle Allen, State STD Director,
Georgia Department of Community Health was the guest speaker for the program. Participants from across
the state, representing community-based organizations and AIDS service organizations, were treated to a unique insight
of the former direct service provider that covered Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Herpes, and
Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Attendees from AID Atlanta, Aniz Incorporated, Atlanta Harm
Reduction Center, Columbus Wellness Center, Empowerment Resource Center, Making A Way Housing, NAESM,
SisterLove, and Someone Cares participated in the course. The STD 101 garnered rave review,
based on feedback gathered through the course evaluation process.
