Empowerment Resource Center (ERC) is continuing its efforts to heighten the awareness of HIV and AIDS.   On Saturday, March 7, 2009, ERC will host the Cycle of Silence™ mini-conference in observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This forum will be held at Historic Fire Station No. 6, located at 39 Boulevard NE, Atlanta GA  and is expected to reach 100 Atlantans. The Cycle of Silence™ session is open to the public and focuses on HIV prevention, transmission modes, and barriers to HIV prevention in efforts to dispel misconceptions and increase the likelihood of reducing at-risk behaviors.

Guest Speakers

The workshop features Lisa Mysnyk, an HIV positive activist, who will share her story and the plight of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in women, Dr. Rana Chakraborty, MD of Emory University School of Medicine, Ponce Pediatric Clinic, who will illustrate the physiological impact of the disease, and local ecumenical leaders.

A few facts about HIV/AIDS in women:

  • In the United States, more than 25% of new infections are in women.
  • In Georgia, women account for 30% of diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases.
  • HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for African American women aged 25 to 34.
  • A baby can become infected with HIV in the womb, during delivery or while breast-feeding.
  • Without treatment, 25% of babies born to women with HIV will be infected by the virus.
